| Of all the horses I've owned I have changed the name of only two of them when I got them. The first was a Registered Appaloosa mare. She was a sweet horse and a trail horse beyond compare. Her reg. name was Squaw Smoke. I hated that, My hubby really liked Lacey Doltan at the time and the horse had a lovely lacey pattern over her rump so she became Lacey! The second is my grade TWH Cooper. He came as Trooper, and I just didn't like it. Cooper and Trooper are very close in the sound and he reminded me of Gary Cooper, a southern gentlemanly type. So he became Cooper. So how did your horse come by his or her name?

I raised a foal from my favorite mare. The foal was born on Derby Day and she was the last foal my mare had and I planned on keeping her. So I named her Derbydaykeepsake, (keeper for short).
Abby the old mare came with her name. I also took in a POA pony and he did not have a name. He was donated to our 4-H club so the club named him Clover. I was told a quarter horse that I bought at a sale was named Poco. But when the guy gave me a copy of his papers, I found out his registered name was Doc Bars Amigo. So he is called Amigo.
When I bought my little white shetland pony, he was named Frosty. But I did not like that, it is just too plain and common, so we changed it to Shasta. He was only 2 years old and the time and did not seem to know his name.
I then bought a TWH, she was 3 at the time and the guy was a horse trader, said he did not know her name but they called her Rebel. That did not fit her, so I started calling her Jubile after Jubilee that is so well known in the TWH world.

Hi Meekie, interesting question! I can't wait to hear some of the answers you'll get. My 12 yr. old grade Walkaloosa came to me a year ago with the name Storm (which I'm not too fond of), but what I find fascinating is that it fits him perfectly! The days when he behaves like a thunderstorm are the most trying...
I've always found it surprising that so many horses (named as foals) have names that suit them so well into adulthood... or is it that a name becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I had an animal communicator talk with Gwen before I bought her. Her name was Comp back then. The communicator asked her if she liked that name or would like another one. She said Gwen said she rather liked the name Gweneviere!
So that is her name. It was of real interest to me that about a year after she came to TX I contacted the previous owner and just happen to mention that I changed her name to Gwen.
She wrote back what an interesting coincedence that when she first got Gwen she had toyed with the idea of naming her after King Arthur's bride.
To me that was a real AH HA moment 'cause I wondered from day one, where she would have heard that name to decide she liked it!
Anyway that's my story.

TWH gelding - Primo came with his name.
SSH mare - Bebiins - Ojibwe for baby. My hubby calls her BG for baby girl - I usually call her Bibs. She was so small when I got her as a 2 yr old. She didn't even have a name.
SSH stud - is Cheyloh (Shiloh) His grandsire name is Cheyenne I called him Chey(shy) hence Cheyloh.
MFT mare - Thunder - came with her name - though it should be Pokey.
Morab mare LouLou - Her dam's name is Libby, I called her LibbyLou - daughter became LouLou.

All my horses' barn names came from some part of their registration names when we got them.
My quarter horse went from Tuffy to Zammy. He really was a "tuff" horse and kind of like when you name a dog "killer", we hoped he would mellow out and he has. Our other quarter horse stayed Cash since that's the only cash we have left after spending it all on four horses.
My Rocky Mtn went from Mikey to ******. I just didn't care for the name mikey. But even now, after two years, there are times when I'm not sure he knows his new name.
And my TWH went from Thriller to Blue. It started off as Boo-Boo after boo-boo the bear, but then got shortened to Blue since he's a blue roan (not very original I know). But I just didn't want him living up to the name Thriller. I loved the name thriller for a show horse, but he really is a boo-boo type of horse.

Below are the names my horses came with, followed by what I called them, and why I changed the ones I did!
Blue-Boy - Blue-Boy
The Kiowa Kid - Kid
Whittemore's Coquette - Foxy (means the same thing, much easier to say.)
Redacre Ruby - Ready (went to 3rd grade with a girl named Ruby I didn't like, but the horse knew her name so I had to come up with something close.
Stonegate's Juliette - Juliette
Ramblin' Red Man - Hobo (similar meaning, easier to say, really fit him.)
Souvenir's BlackJack - BlackJack
Nite Storm's Nitro - Dinah (I'm mean really! Who would ever name a mare NITRO!!)

When my horse was foaled in 2002, he was full of hair that ran in ringlets down the length of his body. He was dubbed the name "Harry" as a barn name. His registered name was too long to do anything short with so now at almost 7 years old his barn name has never changed.
Now we have purchased about 1 month ago a registered Appy with an eqally long name, but he is dubbed "Buck" of all things. So, at age 11 we saw no reason for changing his name.
Chris and "Harry"
Monte and "Buck"

Taylor got her name from my niece. Out of respect, I didn't change her name, although I wanted to name her Piper. I call her Biggie because she is smaller than the other horses.
Lace has red spots in her white blaze and the same spots on one of her hind legs.

| Mo came as Mo short for Mohogany from his coloring. I'd wanted to change it but, neighbors son wouldn't hear of it saying "Mo is a Mo", and so he is. Sometimes it's Mow as in how well he keeps the grass down, sometimes it's Mosey as he mosey's on over the gait, sometimes it's Sweet Mo, Silly Mo, My Mo, The Mo, Mo Man... He's got lots of nicknames but, Mo is who he is.

This is fun! Peach came with her name and it fits her to a tee. She is very sweet and gentle. Savanna is named by my husband and he said it is because of where we live out on the plains or the savanna as it were. It fits Savanna and he seems to like it. We have not ever found a short version of his name we like yet. Perhaps this spring when we ride a short version will present itself.

Well, Shadow came to us with the name Nikki (because she nickered at her owner, which she still does) but Shadow is part of her registered name and that's what she does - very, very well.
Magic is Gypsy Sunrise Magic because we live in an area called the Magic Valley and because he is the buckskin in my avatar that will turn gray and he changes color every season like magic.
Solaris is Gypsy Sunrise Solaris because he is a blue-eyed cremello with a sunlite mane and tail and Solaris is from book I was reading at the time and the name referred to the Sol as the sun.
Misty is Gypsy Sunrise Misty who was orphaned at 12 hours old and she is named for her dam Colorado Misty Dawn. She's a golden bucksin who will gray eventually and she changes color every season, too.
Jazz is Gypsy Sunrise Ida-Mo Jazz because one of his great grand sires was Southern Jazz on both top and bottom and someone on this message board suggested using it in his name. He's also a blue-eyed cremello and very, very mellow like good jazz.

Our first horse was an oof the track T.B. His jockey club papers called him Driving Force. We called him Lucky because I thought he was lucky to be alive and everyone I knew thought he was lucky to have me. He has since passed away.
Then we had a Q.H. registered name was/is Joe Jack Sugar. We called him Jack. He is living with a woman that abolutly adores him and we still get to see him.
We have a Pinto that is named Cobblestone because he has makings down his neck that look like a cobblestone sidewalk. That was to long to say so I shortened it to Colbe. However we do call him Scooby alot because he acts like Scooby doo. We still have him.
We have a SSH that his registered name is Calvins Little Joe. We call him Calvin or Cal. We still have him.
Now it depends what the horses are doing will depend on their names sometimes when they are miss behaving they have other names that I won't write down, I am sure you all used them a time or two as well.

This is a great thread. I love coming up with names, so it is very interesting to hear how all these names were derived.
When I found Mystic I wanted to name him from his bloodlines. It turned out he went back to Parker's Moonbeam (Sire of Trigger) and since he is a champagne he looks like a moonbeam. My husband is really into Sci-fi/fantasy books, so the name Mystic was kinda a selling point for me to convince him to let me buy him. So he became Mystic Moonbeam.
When Magic came home, the name Magic just went along with Mystic. She's black so Black Magic worked well. I also, threw in part of her sire and dam's names, so her full registered name is Eagles Black Magic Memory.
Now Rokko, he is the strange one. We wanted to call him Wizard (kinda go along with Mystic and Magic), but couldn't come up with anything else to go with it for a registered name. So hubby and son started looking at the elfish language from Lord of the Rings and came up with Istar Rokko, which means wizard horse.

Mira came with her name Shadows Miercoles Nina which in spanish is Wednesday and little girl, she is from the shadows spotted alen line and born on a wed and was a filly, then they called her Mira for short. When they explained the name I was like ok thats cool.
Coal is Motown's BMW was called Beamer, and the BMW was the breeders intials also, but hubby is strictly a ford man and said he was not riding around on no Beamer, so he changed it to Coal short for Coalminer=Loretta Lynn song who he loves.
Cruz is Houdini's Poppin Pusher was called Poppin, but I did not want to jinx myself with that kind of name, so we like short 4 letter names and I thought well when your out riding a walking horse you are usually Cruisin so I like the look and sound of Cruz.

I just joined this mb and I thought the topic of names was a great way to start. My MFT mare is named Rosie. How boring hugh. She came with that name though and I have friends that knew her from the time she was born. She was 9 years old when I bought her 5 years ago. Anyway, she will always be Rosie to those who knew her before so I kept the name. She had a fillie that I named Flashy Rose because the dad was Flashy black tie.

A friend of mine is superstitious about changing names. She says it's bad luck. I don't believe in luck, bad or good. It's either meant to be or not. I have changed the "call" names of all of my horses with the exception of one (because I liked it) and coincidentally, he remains the only horse I ever disliked.
My Blaze came to me unregistered as Joe Dirt. I thought it was very demeaning to him so my son changed it to Blaze, which I wasn't crazy about, but he was Tyler's horse at the time and I wanted him to pick whatever name he felt was good. When I got Blaze registered earlier this year, I registered him after his Sire's name "The Black Knight" and from his Dam's lineage "Midnight Sun" and then named him Knight's Blazing Sun.
Cajun came registered as "He's Armed With Champagne", with influence from his Dam's side Gen's Armed and Dangerous and his sire's side Go Boy's Champagne Pride. His call name was Danny, and I'm not a big fan of animals named human names (plus my husband's name is Dan). He is a pretty grey/tan taupe color which reminded me of someone with mulatto coloring, or cajun coloring, so I named him Cajun. I think it's appropriate for him.
